Course Overview

Historical evolution of tunnelling. Types, shapes, clearances and alignment of tunnels and caverns. Geotechnical investigation and ground characterization.

Conventional tunnelling, employing drill and blast techniques, for hard rocks. Norwegian method of tunnelling (NMT). Caverns. Conventional mechanical deep tunnelling, employing NATM or ADECO-RS. Ground improvement and pre-support. Conventional mechanical shallow tunnelling employing SCL or LASERSHELL. Tunnel portals. Special structures, such as lay-bys, niches, cross-passages, etc.

Shafts and deep excavations. Full face tunnelling with main beam gripper TBM. Shield Tunnelling. Pipe-jacking and micro-tunnelling. Cut and cover tunnels. Waterproofing and final lining.

Ground monitoring. Structural analysis of tunnelling. Operational, economic and environmental issues. Tutorials and assignments.
